CDPR Confirms The Witcher Remake will be Open-World

In a surprise move, last month CD Projekt Red announced a remake of the original ‘The Witcher’ is in the works. The game was announced under a codename as CDPR revealed an outline for their future titles. While it was codenamed as ‘Canis Majoris’, it was revealed later that it’s actually The Witcher Remake. And in the latest development, the game will feature an open-world, unlike the original.

The Witcher Remake will be Open-World

The Witcher 3 is undoubtedly one of the best games ever made. Although it is widely known for its vast open-world, that hasn’t always been the case with the series. The original Witcher was a very linear game. 2007’s The Witcher had different areas and smaller locations that you could only visit as a part of the quest and then they’d be locked again.

It seems like CDPR is taking The Witcher 3 route with their new remake and making it a fully open-world. In their Q3 2022 earnings press release, CDPR has revealed that The Witcher Remake will be a ‘story-driven, single-player open-world RPG – a modern reimagining of 2007’s The Witcher’.

This makes the upcoming remake even more interesting as there will be a lot more to explore in the world. The original Witcher and its sequel often get sidelined due to the massive success of The Witcher 3. If CDPR replicates its formula, The Witcher Remake could turn out to be great and we have great expectations too.

What We Know So Far

The Witcher Remake is currently in the early stages of development at the Polish studio Fool’s Theory. Veteran Witcher developers are working on it under the supervision of CDPR. The game is a complete reimagining of the original and will use Unreal Engine 5, instead of the CDPR’s RED Engine. Head of Studio, CDPR, Adam Badowski stated:

Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger. Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”

That is all the information we have about the game right now. The game is currently in early development so it is safe to assume it is at least a few years. But to hype it more, The Witcher 3 next-gen update is just a few days away. In addition, a brand new Witcher trilogy is also in development. All in all, if you are a Witcher fan, now is a great time to be alive.
