Heartstopper Renewed For Seasons 2 and 3

Netflix’s teen series “Heartstopper” won hearts far and wide, and fans can get even more excited now, as production for the second season has officially wrapped, meaning its return can’t be too far off. On Dec. 2, Netflix posted a photo on Instagram of actors Kit Connor and Joe Locke with writer Alice Oseman, alongside the caption, “And that’s a wrap on Heartstopper Season 2… à bientôt! “

The French phrase, translating to “see you soon,” makes total sense considering the cast had been spotted filming around Paris. Plus, “Heartstopper” is based on the series of graphic novels by Oseman, and the next volume sees the characters head to the city of love. Although no official release date has been announced, Oseman also took to Instagram to tell followers, “That’s a wrap on Heartstopper season 2! It’s been an incredibly intense few months on set with many new challenges for the cast and crew, but everyone rose to those challenges with such passion and skill and determination. Huge thanks to every single member of the cast and crew – everyone has worked ridiculously hard and given it their all, and for that I am eternally grateful. This season is going to be so magical and I can’t wait to get started on post-production! “

Fans had been hopeful about the potential for more seasons since the series dropped on April 22, citing the show’s extensive source material as a compelling reason to continue on. Not long after, the streamer announced the charming show would be getting a second and third season to continue exploring the lives of Nick, Charlie, and their friends.

While the characters we’ve grown to love make a return, Netflix revealed there are some new faces around Truham Grammar High School. There are four new characters, including Sahar Zahid (played by Leila Khan) as a Higgs student, David Nelson (played by Jack Barton) as Nick’s older brother, James McEwan (played by Bradley Riches) as a Truham student, and Mr. Farouk (played by Nima Taleghani) as a Truham teacher.

The first season of the Netflix adaptation primarily covers the plot from the first two volumes of the book series. With four volumes in total, and Volume 5 (currently planned to be the final volume) slated for a 2023 release date, that leaves two more volumes of material that have already been published, plus another soon-to-be-released volume, which could form the bulk of the next two seasons.

Prior to the announcement of the upcoming seasons, the show’s creative team hinted about where the show would go next. “I’ll definitely want to be bringing in the themes of mental health, because that’s something that’s really important in the books,” Oseman told Digital Spy on April 24. “The challenge of writing ‘Heartstopper’ is exploring those darker issues while keeping the tone so optimistic and hopeful. That has been, like, the struggle of writing it for me the whole way through. But I like to think that it’s possible. I feel like I have achieved it in the books.”

Oseman also revealed that in future seasons, the scope of the story will likely expand to involve some of the teachers, not just the teenage students who have been the center of the show so far. “We’ll be moving into volume three of the books. And that is when the teacher romance happens,” Oseman said in the 24 April interview. “So in the show, we’ve already got Mr. Ajayi, but in the books there’s also Mr. Farouk, who comes in, in volume three. And they have this kind of interesting friendship going on in the background that eventually becomes something more.”

While release dates for the show’s second and third seasons have not been confirmed yet, fans can rejoice knowing that the “Heartstopper” onscreen story is far from over.
