The Witcher remake will be open-world, CD Projekt has confirmed

CD Projekt has confirmed that its upcoming The Witcher remake will be an open-world game.

In a presentation this week, the company described the recently announced project as a story-driven, single-player open-world RPG – a modern reimagining of 2007’s The Witcher.”

While it’s perhaps unsurprising that the game will follow the open-world structure of the most recent series release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, this was the first official confirmation.

CD Projekt announced last month that a “full-fledged remake” of The Witcher had entered production.

It said the remake will be “rebuilt from the ground up” in Unreal Engine 5 and is currently in the early stages of development at the Polish studio Fool’s Theory, where veteran Witcher series staff are involved. CD Projekt Red is providing full creative supervision.

CD Projekt Red boss Adam Badowski also said: “The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger.”

In October, CD Projekt Red outlined its development slate for the foreseeable future, including a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, a new trilogy of Witcher games, Witcher spin-offs, and the studio’s first original IP.

Following several delays and a change of developer, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s new-gen update will be released on December 14 as a standalone purchase for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5, and as a free update for players who already own the game on PC and last-gen consoles.

Strong Cyberpunk 2077 sales drove record third quarter financial results for CD Projekt, the company announced on Monday.
